Sebbene non detenga il primato come l’orologio più costoso al mondo – un titolo attualmente detenuto da un Rolex Daytona di Paul Newman, venduto nel 2017 per 17 milioni di euro, e alcuni modelli di Patek Philippe che hanno superato i 20 milioni questo articolo è senza dubbio un pezzo storico. Ritenuto perduto fino alla vendita da parte della figlia di Brando, Petra Brando Fischer, all’asta nel 2019, l’orologio fu indossato durante le riprese e conserva l’eredità cinematografica di Brando, che lo personalizzò rimuovendo la lunetta durante le riprese. La figlia stessa raccontò la storia di questa modifica: «Indossò l’orologio sul set di Apocalypse Now nelle Filippine e gli fu detto di toglierlo durante le riprese, poiché avrebbe attirato troppa attenzione. Brando contestò questa richiesta: “Se non guardano me ma l’orologio, allora vuol dire che non sto facendo bene il mio lavoro di attore”.
